Border Birders Club
A super birding club where the whole family can have a nice Saturday walk around, looking
at different types of birds and chat to the friendly members on the way.

City Hall
Situated in Oxford Street, East London, South Africa

Has a beautiful marble staircase, a Victorian hall and quadrangle.
The foundation stone was laid in 1897, by Mayor David Rees.
The design included the "Victoria Tower". This clock tower was added to commemorate
Queen Victoria's 60 years on the throne. With its large clock faces it rather resembles
Big Ben's Tower. The marble staircase was constructed from marble directly imported
from Carrar in Italy. The building was fully restored between 1989 and 1991.
Cove Rock
An impressive rock formation 16km west of East London (near Grand Prix track).
Supports a varied seabird population.
Reached by taking a 45 minute beachfront walk from Lagoon Valley or 1km along the beach from the car park.
It offers a grandstand view of the area and makes an ideal fishing platform.
Fort Glamorgan
Now known as the Department of Correctional Services: East London
Situated on the West Bank.

Fort Glamorgan was established in 1848/49 at the
same time that the harbour was officially
founded, to provide "quarters for troops and
to include a large commissariat store
assets".
Today you can see a brick vaulted
building that was once the powder house. Access
to the Powder House is through the main prison
gates. The Powder House is now a national monument.

German Settlers' Memorial

Commemorates the 1858/9 arrival of more than 2 000
German men, women and children, which helped
expand the settlement.

The Kimerling Plaque
On the corner of John Bailie and Galway Road, Bunkers Hill.
Commemorates the first controlled power driven flight in South Africa, which took place
in Bunkers Hill.

Lock Street Gaol

Formerly a prison built in the 1800's and South Africa's first woman's gaol - now a
quaint business shopping centre specialising in curio's and crafts with many
fascinating home industries.
This gaol houses persons such as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (ex-wife of Nelson Mandela)
and Daisy de Melker, the woman who poisoned three husbands with arsenic.
So while you shop around see the original gallows.
