Profile of Alice and District:

Alice is a small country town in the Eastern Cape. It is situated on the Tyumie river which flows from the Amatola mountains.

The town Alice was established in 1847 and was named by the colonialists after Queen Victoria's third child, and hence the district Victoria East.

Initially it was a military post. The old Fort at Fort Hare, which is a national monument, indicates the importance of the Alice area from the time of the fontier wars - the wars of dispossession.

Although a small town, Alice has emerged as a focal point for the education of the Africans.

Educational institutions, like the then Lovendale Missionary Institutions, the University of Fort Hare and
Victoria Hospital, are well-known throughout the length and breadth of Southern Africa and beyond.

Efforts of a former principal of Lovendale Missionary Institution, Dr. James Stewart (affectionately
known as "Somgxada"), and later his successor Rev. James Henderson and other interested parties led to the
foundation of the University of Fort Hare, then called "The South African Native College".

For the tourist and/or visitor there is a lot to see around Alice.

Come and enjoy your stay in Alice at  Phila's Lodge.
